Mexico City will have a Christmas tree 112 feet high

Mexico City began the assembly of a Christmas tree 112 feet high, which aspires to be the largest in the world and beat the Guinness record holding Rio de Janeiro with 85 meters, mayoral announced Monday.

The tree will be opened on December 5 as part of 'The Magic of Christmas', a program of events lasting 36 days and which was the installation of two ice rinks, the typical Mexican births and a concert by tenor Placido Sunday, detailed a local government statement.

"One of the main attractions will be the Christmas tree of 112 meters (...) which is expected to break the current Guinness record has Brazil," says the document.

Rio de Janeiro for 13 years has the Guinness record of the world's tallest tree, a pine tree that is placed on a floating basis in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon and reaches 85 meters in height.

The huge metal structure that will support the tree and can be seen in the bandstand in the resort of Palma Paseo de la Reforma, just steps from the Angel of Independence, the most emblematic monument of the capital.

In 2008, Mexico City Zocalo installed in the ice world's largest with 32,000 square meters, plus ice slides for children, cabins and a snow igloo.

Mexico City expected to visit at least three million people will leave some 10 billion pesos (about $ 760 million), according to the text.

The mayoral, led by leftist Marcelo Ebrard said the Christmas events will be supported by 17 private firms finance 80% of activities.
